Sailor's Valentines were made on the Islands of the West Indies, principally Barbados, throughout the 19th century. These islands were often a ships last port of call before returning to home, particularly for vessels of the United States Navy.
Description / Expertise
A sailor's valentine, the left hand design with the sentiment "Forget Me Not" arranged in tiny shells, whilst the design on the facing right hand side is centred with a heart, both designs surrounded by numerous shells from the island's shores. The cedarwood case painted with old black paint.
