Medium
Walrus Ivory
Literature:
Miniature walrus ivory carvings have been made in the Bering Sea area and the Aleutian Islands since prehistoric times. Once they served a functional purpose as amulets or as substitutes for real people, animals and supernatural beings, or as symbolic images used for grave goods. This detailed carving with its inlaid baleen portholes and parka clad sailor was however, made for pleasure and for trade with the Europeans and Americans.
