18th century 'plague pan' - not chestnut roaster. (18th century Continental)

Reference no. 89343

Dimensions

24.00inch high    (  60.96 cm high)

Diameter

5.50inch ( 13.97 cm)

Description / Expertise

A most unusual and decorative piece sold to me as the only genuine 18th century copper chestnut roaster ever encountered! It would work as such but I believe it to be a kind of pastille burner for wafting pleasant smells around the house. These are sometimes referred to as 'plague pans' as it was believed that the plague was carried in the foul air. It is made using the early type of rolled up sheet metal rivet and stylistically may originate from anywhere in Europe although Italian repousse work can be similar. It is something of a mystery, look at the pics and see what you think!
