Description / Expertise

An exceptionally well carved cuckoo and quail quarter striking wall clock, made by Furderer Jaegler et Cie, Strasbourg dating from c.1880.

The clock has a classic wooden plated mechanism with inset brass bearings. The three train weight driven movement has an external locking plate striking on a gong and operating the cuckoo. The third train strikes the quarters on a second gong and operates the quail.

The finely carved and well proportioned chalet style case has a foliate cresting above two bird doors, and with pierced foliate hand carving to the sides and base.

The restored dial has hand-cut bone numerals and hands to match the originals.

The original pendulum is a wooden circle, centrally carved with a leaf.

Three cast iron pinecone weights.

The bellows have been restored using the correct leather material to preserve the original tone.

The cuckoo and quail are the hand-painted originals.

Height of the case is 23 inches.

Overall, this is a fine example of this increasingly rare classic cuckoo and quail wall clock.
