Description / Expertise
HERBERT J. Harvey (1884-1928)
‘A Child of the Ballet’
ETCHING – SIGNED 49/100
A British portrait painter, etcher and metal worker, Herbert Johnson Harvey was the son of the artist, John Rabone Harvey. His art was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and other important institutions. Today examples of his etched and engraved art are included in public collections in Birmingham, London, Cheltenham and Hereford, as well as in the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the University of Michigan Museum of Art.
"Harvey became an etcher during the 1920's and, in that medium, produced some good portraits and some clever and convincing 'Tetes de fantasie', ... Probably his total output did not exceed thirty-five plates, although his powerful vision, allied with great technical resources makes one feel he might have accomplished far more had he wished. *
