Description / Expertise
A fabulous portrait of a young boy dressed in green jacket, waistcoat and lace shirt, indistinctly signed with initials, set in gold frame with garnet border, the reverse with commemorative tree made of hair showing bottom branch broken
Although bearing all the traits of an early Cotes this work, it appears to be seemingly unsigned. The tree on the reverse with broken branch suggests that the sitter in the portrait has recently died. Perhaps the sitter is Cotes's only child who died in infancy - which might account for the lack of signature.
