Description / Expertise
George Engleheart, 1803
A superb portrait of Honoria Blane (1776-1856) nee Newnham, wearing a décolleté white dress with bow and tassels on the sleeves, a blue and white bandeau in her brown hair
set in the original silver frame with the initial H of diamonds on the border surrounded by further rose cut diamonds set in a pierced foliate design
Honoria was the daughter of Thomas Newnham, Southborough, Kent, England (who was brother to Nathaniel Newnham, Lord Mayor of London in 1783). Mr. Newnham is recorded in Engleheart’s fee book as having had his portrait painted in 1782, his wife was painted in 1788 and Miss Newnham was painted in 1803.
Honoria married in 1798, William Blane of Winkfield Place, Berkshire, England, who, among other things, was an investor in land in Washington, USA (through his friend, Thomas Law, who married a collateral descendant of George Washington, and brother of Edward Law, Attorney General and Speaker of the House of Lords). William Blane was the brother of Sir Gilbert Blane, 1st Bt., of Blanefield, Ayrshire (title now extinct), a Physician in Ordinary to HRH George IV. William and Honaria had seven children, one son George was captain in the Royal Navy
In the 1851 census Honaria Blane is recorded as being a widow and house and land proprietor
This portrait is an excellent example of Engleheart at his best
