A good George III period Musical Bracket Clock (c. 1790 London)
Reference no. 81343

Description / Expertise

A good George III period musical bracket clock with 8 day hour striking musical movement.
The elegant mahogany case has a bell top and stands on four ogee brass feet. The arched door is bound with a brass moulding, and there are beautifully cast brass sound frets to the front and wooden sound frets to the sides. The whole case is of a rich, well patinated and figured mahogany.

The 8 day triple fusee movement strikes the hours on a single bell, and plays one of two musical tunes on twelve bells. The tunes are Lovely Nancy and Harvest Home. The tune selection dial for Lovely Nancy and Harvest Home is set within the arch. The arched dial has a matted brass centre, gilt foliate corner spandrels, a dummy pendulum aperture and the maker’s signature is on an inset disc between VIII and IIII. The back plate and the back cocks are most beautifully engraved with flowers and foliage.
