Provenance

A similar set of chairs reputed to have come from Marquesses Conyngham, Slane Castle, Ireland sold in Christie's, zs". June, 1978. Lot 28. Decorated in simulated rosewood and gilt.

The design for these chairs is linked to designs by Henry Holland. These chairs incorporate aspects of design found on two different patterns of chair supplied to Samuel Whitbread for Southill under the direction of Henry Holland, see Francis Collard publication, "Regency Furniture" page 44/45. Similar chairs in Brighton Pavilion.

Description / Expertise

A fine pair of George 111 Regency period painted and gilded chairs with later decoration in the manner of Henry Holland, with a channelled toprails, finials and ormolu splats in the form of a laurel wreaths, with scrolled arms, the cane seats now with a squab cushions, above panelled friezes and corner paterae, raised on channelled sabre legs.
