Provenance

The foundations of Jamaican cabinet making were laid by an émigré Scot, Ralph Turnbull (b.1788), who began business in Kingston in 1815, and was later joined by his brothers Thomas & Cuthbert, and two brothers, relations by marriage, James and William Pitkin. All these cabinet makers employed local rich and rare woods in their work.

Constructed from indigenous specimen woods; three scrolled feet support the circular dished base, radially laid with veneers in sunburst form; the octagonal tapering central column, with its’ tilt top action, supports the top, which has a central circular motif, with an outer field of cube inlays, and an exterior guard band, inlaid with a running diamond pattern.
