Description / Expertise
A fabulous portrait of Jane Long wearing a white dress with lace border, a gold necklace and pearl earrings
Jane was the daughter of a West Indies Merchant Beeston Long and his wife Sarah Cropp. She was part of a large family one her brother's being Charles Long, Lord Farnborough whose portrait was also taken by Engleheart (see male page). Lord Farnborough was a politican and connoisseur of arts. Jane married her cousin Charles Long of Hurst Hall. Engleheart painted a number of members of the Long family. In 1787 is an entrance for Mr. Chas. Long and Miss Long, this entrance to Miss Long could refer to this portrait of Jane. It was usual for couples to exchange portraits at the time of their engagement. She would have been Miss Long at her engagement and Mrs. Long after marriage.
