Description / Expertise

A stained birch centre stool or day bed, the rectangular cushion seat covered in grey corduroy flanked by open ends on rectangular block feet.

The original design for this day bed survives in the Glasgow University Collection entitled 'Couch in Ladies Common Room'. 'The wood is to be birch stained dark and waxed'and the upholstery 'mouse grey corduroy'. The original Mackintosh drawing shows an upholstered back but Fra Newbery has annotated 'with a seat seat this width a stuffed or even padded back is not necessary at all, cushions can be hung along the wall at the back (from a little moulding) and movable cushions as many as needed can be placed on the seat'.
