X Frame Dining Chair
This mahogany dining chair is of a rare but practical form that we have not encountered before. To dismantle the chair, the two locking bolts that fit through the bottom rail of the back into the seat are removed. The hinged seat, which is also held by two locating pins to the front, will then lift and fold flat against the chair back. This allows the X frame legs to fold and also the hinged back (with the seat now folded against it) to further fold reducing the height of the chair in half. With the legs and the seat folded the width of the chair is also greatly reduced, as can be seen. Although the legs immediately indicate that the chair is made to fold, the back does have a subtle elegance in the shape of the uprights and the graceful manner in which they meet the top rail. Added to this the cross rail is shaped to the back showing good attention to detail. There are no maker's marks to the chair other than XI stamped top the underside of the seat, suggesting that it was part of a set of twelve chairs. The quality of the chair would suggest a good manufacturer and certainly the Catherine Street makers advertised sets of dining chairs that folded, albeit to designs that did not reduce to such a compact size. Circa 1830.
