Antique Campaign Games Table (c. 1830 English)

Reference no. 57937

Dimensions

15.20inch wide    28.75inch high    12.50inch deep (38.61 cm wide  73.02 cm high  31.75 cm deep)

Description / Expertise

As can be seen, this George IV mahogany campaign games table fits neatly into its folding chess board box. To set the table up the hexagonal column is screwed onto the tripod legs. The bottom of the column has a raised ring, which fits into a groove in the central section of the legs. As the column is tightened to the base the ring locks into the groove preventing the legs from folding. The column is telescopic and so extends in length, with an internal spring holding its position. A brass push button to the side of the column releases it. The box forms the top when fully opened and the internal bar formed by the two hinged sides sits into a fitting on the top of the column. A wooden slide is then pushed across to lock the top to the column. Although the top is marked out in rosewood and boxwood veneers for chess the table could of course have been used for a number of purposes when set up. An identical table is illustrated in British Campaign Furniture. Circa 1830. Dimensions assembled are given.
