Description / Expertise

Antique Folding Chair for a Child
Herbert McNair, the colleague of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, was the designer of this type of folding chair. However, this version was made for a small child and is quite extraordinary for it. As you might expect from a member of the Glasgow group, the chair is very aesthetic with its shaped front legs. However, it is also quite clever in the way it folds. The padded seat is slung and fixed by a bar to hooks to the bottom and two brass hooks that can be set in 2 positions to the top. A rod with large turned caps to either end is used to hold the chair at one of a number of angles. It is fitted through the brass faced cutouts to the sides of the legs and the caps unscrew to remove it. With the seat and the bar removed, the hinged front legs, and the back legs, will fold in against the frame of the chair. Although small in size, the chair was made to be used and is a rare example. Late 19th Century.
