Description / Expertise

The clue to the purpose of this leather box is the maker’s name of Savory & Moore. They were chemists whose roots go back as far as 1794 to a business set up by Thomas Paytherus in London. He was joined three years later by Thomas Savory who had been an apprentice apothecary in Cheltenham. In 1806 Savory became a partner and Thomas Moore who had a chemists in the same street joined. When Paytherus retired in 1811 the business was re-named Savory, Moore & Co. The business was certainly ambitious and expanded through the century to add shops in Chapel Street, Regent Street and Lancaster Gate to their main premises at 136 New Bond Street. They also had a shop and warehouse in Brighton. In the first half of the 19th Century they became known for their medical chests and even supplied William IV. In the second half of the century they were commissioned by the War Office to supply medicines and surgical equipment during the Crimean War and in the Boer War they fitted out hospital ships and supplied field and other hospitals. The business carried onto into the 20th century and acquired a number of chemists until they had 40 shops by the mid 1940s. In 1992 they were bought by Lloyds Chemists plc. The box is lined in velvet and the interior of the lid is black leather with a hinged padded board to hold papers etc. It locks with a key but also has a fixed belt strap to further secure the top. The lid is held by 3 hinges and has stitched seems to the edges. The top has simple tooled decoration. Circa 1880.
