A fine Andrew Kirkaldy autograph “ELITE” mussleback mashie with line face markings, hickory shaft and sued leather grip. The club is in very nice condition, the rear of the club head marked “Martin & Kirkaldy, Ltd., Special, Edinburgh, MASHIE, Andrew Kirkaldy, ELITE.”

Andrew Kirkaldy was born in Denhead, Scotland, in 1860. Kirkaldy was mainly a player of golf, like his two professional golfing brothers Jack and Hugh, and he was the Open Runner up in 1879, 1889 and 1891. Throughout his professional career he lived in St. Andrews, except whilst he was the professional at Royal Winchester in 1892. He was an Honorary Professional to R & A from 1910 until his death in 1934. In 1908 Kirkaldy was enlisted by the club maker Robert Bell Martin. Kirkaldy never had a hands-on role in the business, only making design recommendations and attracting business with his name. The firm manufactured many models of clubs, amongst them being the A. Kirkaldy Autograph, Pug, “S” and Elite models.

Robert Bell Martin was born in Linlithgow, 1871. He played on the Burntisland links at the age of 7, later moving to Leven.
Martin was the professional to the Kirkaldy (Fife) Golf Club in 1905, moving on in 1906 to Dunfermline Golf Club, North Queenferry until 1911 when he left for Australia. Active in many golfing endeavors, Martin founded the Scottish Professional Golfers Union and served as Honorary Secretary to the Professional Golfers Association.
