Description / Expertise

This ash staff is clever in its dual design and would have been useful to the travelling artist. The brass ferrule to the bottom of the cane has a small screw to fix it in place and when removed allows the shaft to divide into a half and two quarter sections. The quarters being the front legs of the easel and the half the back. The three brass pins, that support the canvas, are stored in cut outs to the inside of the back leg and so held in place when the legs are locked together as a staff. As the legs are each made out of two pieces united by a brass collar, the easel can also be reduced in height, for use on a table. The pair of pins to the front legs can be set into 13 different position at full height or 10 as a table easel. A very interesting form of easel. Size as staff is given.
