Ralph Hedley was a Newcastle genre painter. Born in Richmond, Yorkshire, he studied at Newcastle Art School and attended classes at the Life School under William Bell Scott.
He was a member of the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) the Vice President of the South Shields Art Club. He became President of Bewick Club & Northmbrian Art Institute and designed the chancel of The Cathedral Church of St Nicholas.
Hedley exhibited at RA from 1879, his subjects usually scenes of the working life of ordinary people in his native northeast. His work can be seen in Laing Gallery, Newcastle and provides a valuable record of everyday life in Tyneside in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
