JOHN McLEAN (b.1939)

John McLean was a painter of abstracts, including distinctive lozenges, stokes and swirls of colour, and teacher, born in Liverpool. His influences include “post-war American and Canadian painting, Matisse, Miro and Braque. John McLean’s father was the artist Talbert McLean and he was based in London. He studied at St Andrews University, 1957-62, and at Courtauld Institute of Art, 1963-6.
After the Courtauld, McLean went on to teach at Chelsea School of Art, Goldsmiths’ College, Canterbury School of Art and University College. He lived in New York between 1987 and 1989 and was short listed for the Jerwood Prize in 1995.
McLean’s pictures are in several dozen public and corporate collections, including Tate Gallery, Arts Council, British Council, Contemporary Art Society, Scottish Arts Council, De Beers, Wellcome Foundation and elsewhere.
