The purpose of ironing the cloth is to lay the ‘nap’ flat so as to increase the speed of the balls in play. This was and still is done with a warm dry billiard iron. Care must be taken to keep the iron moving at all times. The iron was heated on a stove and carefully used so as not to scorch the cloth.
