Charles I silver seal-top spoon

Medium

Silver

Dimensions

6.75inch high    (  17.14 cm high)

Condition

Extremely good condition, with a well shaped bowl and a very well defined seal

Description / Expertise

Charles I sterling silver provincial seal-top spoon of very good weight. The seal finial has very good definition and the gilding has faded to a mellow pale gold colour. The flat end of the seal is engraved with pin-pricking. The date 1633 is slightly curved around a small casting fault which occurred when the seal was made. Below this, are the initials MS with IM beneath. The only hallmark is the maker's mark "WG" in the bowl of the spoon. The lap-join, by which the finial was attached to the stem in the provinces, is clearly visible on the back of the stem.
