Description / ExpertiseThis powerful devotional painting was produced between the late 16th century and early 17th century by an artist in the northern European tradition, as a copy of a painting by Albrecht Durer, which is now lost. At least one other copy is known. It is likely to have been painted in Italy since the panel is made of poplar not oak, a wood commonly available to artists working in northern Europe. Albrecht Durer was born in Nuremburg, where he returned between extended visits to the Netherlands and Italy. He is said to have brought the Italian Renaissance to northern Europe. Durer painted the subject of Christ with a Crown of Thorns many times.
