ENGLISH NAIVE DOUBLE PORTRAIT (c. 1840 ENGLISH)

Reference no. 51346

Dimensions

53.30cm wide    65.40cm high    (20.98 inches wide  25.75 inches high)

Description / Expertise

A wonderful naive double portrait, in watercolour and body colour on paper, of two sisters with their dog, cats and a small flock of birds, set in a landscape of vividly depicted trees and rocks, against an intensely blue sky.

This startling and important example of English 19th century folk art is distinguished by typically stiff composition and vivid colouring, with the two sisters, shown holding hands and wearing their best dresses and carrying flowers, appearing almost doll-like in the strange woodland landscape; the depiction of the seated animals looking up at the girls is particularly charming.

This large and unusual painting is within the original faux-rosewood frame.
