Description / Expertise
A fine Chippendale design mahogany partner's desk made by the Newcastle cabinet makers "Sopwith".
The desk has eighteen drawers, nine to each side, with brass swan neck handles and shaped panels to the sides of the desk.
The drawers are mahogany lined and have very good quality Chubb of London locks which are all numbered. The green leather writing surface has a gold tooled decoration and is a replacement.
The desk stands on large ceramic casters and can be moved when assembled and is signed "Sopwith & Co Limited Newcastle" inside one of the drawers.
SOPWITH where a furniture making company in Newcastle upon Tyne which started up in the early 19th century and continued up up until the early 20th century. Desks similar to this where bought by many of the large Ship manufacturers along the Tyne and over the years I have bought several deks of different sizes directly out of the Managers offices.
