Description / Expertise
This stunning bookcase is actually very rare as it is bowfronted and therefore exceptionally difficult to make and hence required the very best cabinet maker of the day to accept such a commission.
The mahogany cornice is crossbanded in tulipwood and inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing. The design of the astragal glazing bars to the doors are quite elegant and of the highest quality. Each of the bars are crossbanded in tulipwood and inlaid with ebony and boxwood stringing flanked by figured mahogany sides.
The secretaire base has fiddle-back interior drawers with ivory turned handles which are original above the writing slide. The beautifully figured mahogany bowfronted oaklined drawers have replaced handles. The cabinet stands on the original French bracket feet.
