Extremely good indeed with very crisp hallmarks and a good patina

Very attractive early George III sterling silver brandy warmer. London 1761 by William Justis. The body of the warmer is bowl-shaped and is totally plain and flares outwards at the rim. The handle is partly silver but continues as a plain, turned, wooden handle to facilitate a cool grip of the pan and is joined to the body by a heart-shaped strengthener. The bowl is supported by a wide, stepped and reeded foot. The full set of extremely clear hallmarks are stamped on the base of the bowl and have been well protected by the foot.

This pan is the most attractive of all the warmer shapes. The term "brandy warmer" is rather generic since it is very probable that these pans were not used to warm brandy only. To-day, they make extremely versatile objects for serving hot butter with asparagus, or hot gravy or any other hot sauce, sweet or savoury. It would be equally useful and very decorative piled high with bon bons, or used as a sugar bowl.
