Description / Expertise

Beautifully engraved Victorian sterling silver school prize medal for The College, Shrewsbury and presented to Miss Thomson in 1824.
The medal is pierced for suspension.
Miss M E Grimshaw mentions these prize medals on page 22 of her booklet "Pre-Victorian Silver School medals awarded to Girls in Great Britain". According to Miss Grimshaw, these medals were awarded as an annual writing prize at the above school. Surviving medals have been recorded between 1804 and 1824. The earliest medal, dated 1804, is in the British Museum collections.
Obverse: Near the milled rim are two concentric circles of raised dots, between which is inscribed in relief: MRS AND THE MISS PRITCHARDS' ESTABLISHMENT. In the centre: THE COLLEGE/ SHREWSBURY.
Reverse: Within a bright cut border: TO/ Miss Thomson/ 1st Prize 3rd Class/ AD 1824/ Continue to persevere.
