Description / Expertise

Hollow moulded pig figure standing foursquare with short snub snout, small eyes and ears, and tail curled tightly on the rump. Models of farmyard and domestic animals like this example commonly occur in Han tombs, known as 'mingqi', or funerary offering and no doubt reflecting the real life presence of the pig upon the deceased's farmyard. It appears this piece was made from two separately moulded identical parts then luted together with the join quite visible, a common practice in the production of mingqi.
