The Florentine Francesco Fanelli was one of the principal bronze sculptor active in the first half of the 17th century and he was the leading sculptor active in England in the age of King Charles I. After spending some years in Genoa, he settled in England by 1632. He became famous for his production of small bronzes, which circulated greatly in England but also on the continent. The 17th century inventory of small bronzes at Whitehall lists a number of sculptures by ‘ffrancisco ffanello’, also called the ‘one-eyed Italian’, pointing a physical handicap.
