Description / Expertise

Cecil Kennedy was born into a large artistic family, his grandfather, father and four of his brothers were artists. Kennedy is best remembered for his superb depictions of flowers, captured in exquisite detail and artful compositions. He had an important exhibiting career, showing at the Royal Academy, London, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, the Fine Art Society and also the Paris Salon, where, in1956, he was awarded the silver medal and in 1970, to great acclaim, the gold medal. Kennedy had many important patrons. Queen Mary bought his work, as did the Duke of Windsor, the Astors and Lord Thompson of Fleet. Queen Mary was quoted as saying of Kennedy's work, "When I see Cecil Kennedy's pictures I can smell the flowers and hear the hum of the bees" - and nothing could be truer then with this beautiful painting by Kennedy of Mediterranean Stocks, cultivated for their brightly coloured flowers and strong night-scent. Above all, Cecil Kennedy's paintings, with their artistic creativity, always convey a great joy of life.
