Description / Expertise

An imposing large "Hamilton" engraving of classical motifs, with original hand colouring in terracotta and black, with highlights in blue. Taken from Antiquites Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines, Tirees du Cabinet de M. Hamilton (First edition Naples 1766).

Sir William Hamilton (1730 - 1803), British Ambassador to Naples from 1764 - 1800, commissioned the cataloguing and drawing of his famous collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and had the work published in 1766 - 7. The antiquities collection was sold to the British Museum in 1772.
