Oak Longcase Clock (c. 000 England)
Reference no. 29144
Oak Longcase Clock

Description / Expertise

An antique oak longcase clock by this noted Leicestershire maker, William Bird of Seagrave.

This example has a particularly small well-proportioned oak case that has developed a fine rich natural colour. The hood door is centred by brass capped fruitwod columns, and the trunk door has a shaped top in common with other Leicestershire clocks. Fixed to the backboard is an original pulley for the pull repeat mechanism.

The movement goes for eight days on one winding and sounds the hours on a bell which may be repeated at will by pulling the cord attached to the unusual levered repeat mechanism.

The time is displayed via the original blued steel hands to the brass dial with raised silvered chapter ring and Roman hour numerals. The silvered dial centre is signed "William Bird - Seagrave". The date is displayed by a third concentric pointer to the inside of the chapter ring.
