Description / Expertise

An attractive pair of "Hamilton" engravings of Greek motifs, with original hand colouring in terracotta and black; taken from Antiquites Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines, Tirees du Cabinet de M. Hamilton (First Edition, Naples 1766).

Sir William Hamilton (1730 - 1803), British Ambassador to Naples from 1764 - 1800, commissioned the cataloguing and drawing of his famous collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, and had the work published in 1766 - 7. The antiquities collection was sold to the British Museum in 1772.
