Description / Expertise

Probably Asian export, Circa 1720

Of solid satinwood, the front rail lightly bowed, the side rails curved towards the back, the splats outlined in herringbone, the cabriole front legs with scrolling ear-pieces, and on pad feet, with drop-in seat. Circa 1720.

Although very much in the English manner, it is very likely that this pair of chairs was made in South East Asia for the English market or, more likely, as a particular commission for an English client. The use of solid satinwood would be very unlikely in English chairs of this date, and features of their construction also suggest a non-English origin.
