Description / Expertise

Rare and amusing bronze George IV boxing medal commemorating the fight between Neat and "Gas" on December 11, 1821.
Obverse: Two prize fighters facing each other with gloved fists up.
Legend: THE GOOD OLD ENGLISH CUSTOM OF DECIDING A QUARREL.
Exergue: NEAT & GAS.
Reverse: A lion in a square, surrounded by scenes illustrating various sports - horse racing, dog fighting, cock fighting and bull baiting.
Legend: THE SPORTSMANS DELIGHT: BLOOD . BONE . ACTION AND GAME.

On December 11, 1821, Bill Neat fought Tom Hickman at Hungerford. Hickman's nickname was "Gas Light Man" or "Gas". This memorable fight went on for eighteen rounds. The medal was struck in bronze and white metal only. See "British Historical Medals 1837-1901", by Laurence Brown, p. 281/1159, where this medal is rated as Rather Rare.
