Literature

Robert, Lord Clive and Baron Plassey (1725-1774) founder of British rule in India, was born in Shropshire. At the age of 19 he was made a clerk in the East India Company's service, but soon quitted his employment in that capacity for the army. He distinguished himself against the rajah of Tanjore, and was appointed commissary. In 1751 he advised an attack on Arcot, in the Carnatic, took it from and held it against the French, and after this and other brilliant successes, returned to England and was made lieutenant-colonel in the king's service. He went out again, and marched against the nabob Surajah Dowlah, and overthrew him at the battle of Plassey in 1757. He established the British power in Calcutta, and was raised to the peerage. When he finally returned to England, a very wealthy man, he was accused of corruption and although this charge was not proven, the upset was said to have contributed to his addiction to opium, and he took his own life in 1774.
