Description / Expertise

This sculpture was made during the 17th century for private devotional use. The Christ’s right arm is raised in a gesture of blessing while the other would probably have held a rose alluding to the future “Passion”. It is likely to have been made in Andalusia and, although the pose differs, it bears close stylistic similarities to the 1606-7 wood figure of the “Nino Jesus” by Juan Martinez Montanes in Seville Cathedral.
