in period silver-gilt frame wiht pierced spiral cresting
The composition in this miniature is almost identical to that in a miniature by
Carriera in the Duke of Devonshire's collection. The exception being that Cupid is depicted looking into the mirror rather than directly at Venus cf. Rosalba
Carriera, by Sani, plate 80
The miniature in the Duke of Devonshire's collection is believed to be one of the 12 miniatures which Lord Burlington, purchased from Carriera in March 1715 for 288 crowns. It would seem plausible that this was part of the same group
