Very attractive silver school Governors' prize medal, presented annually by the Governors of St. Saviour's School, Southwark to the boy considered most deserving by his diligent character and position in the school. 19th century and post 1839. Obverse: Bust of Elizabeth I looking left, coronet, pearls in hair, ear-rings, rich dress, ruff, string of pearls round neck. Legend: ALUMNO OPTIME MERITO PRAEFECTI. D.D. (The governors present (this medal) to the most deserving pupil.) Reverse: View of the school post 1839. Legend: SCHOLA S. SALVATORIS COND. Exergue: ELIZABETHA REG. 1562. RENOV. VICTORIA REG. 1839. (St. Saviour's School, built in the reign of Elizabeth, 1562 and rebuilt in the reign of Victoria, 1839.) On one side of the view of the school is stamped C. EDMONDS. ARCHT. and on the other side W.J. TAYLOR.FEC. See "Medallic Illustrations" vol.I p.110/38. A double length of blue ribbon 1.3 inches wide and 2 inches long is attached to the top of the medal by two silver, decorated bars with a long attachment pin at the back of the top bar.

The school was established on its present foundations by Thomas Cure and John Bingham, saddlers to Queen Elizabeth I and by other principal inhabitants of St. Saviour's, who obtained a charter of incorporation from the Queen in 1562.
