Description / Expertise
A fine soapstone carving of Lu Dong Bin, one of the eight Taoist immortals, by Yang Yu-Hsuan, in a resting pose with his robe opened as if getting some relief from the heat. Signed on the reverse in the fold of his robe : Yu-Hsuan Yang was mentioned by the great conoisseur Chou Liang-kung in a book dealing with his years in Fukien between 1647 and 1655, and was also noted (with the telling detail that "collectors compete to engage him") in an undated Kangxi gazette. Yang's carving was compared with the work of great painting masters.
