Literature:
Probably struck to commemorate the marriage of Napoleon and the Habsburg Marie-Louise in 1810 both of these plaques are signed by Andrieu ( 1763-1822 ). A pupil of the Medallist Gatteaux his neo-classical style suited Napoleon's new Imperial aspirations.
Napoleon was well aware of the power of the effigy both as a memorial and as a propoganda weapon and he exploited it to the full in painting and sculpture.
