Literature:
Painting on glass was described in the 18th century as 'Back Painting'. The manner of painting on glass, in the words of the Dictionarium Polygraphicum 1735 'is quite contrary to that of limning or painting on cloth or wood, for in this, the paint being one side is plainly visible on the other side'. The technique was begun in the 16th century and there are several Italian examples in the Victoria and Albert Museum with backgrounds of silver leaf.
This painting is in the style of a 17th century Dutch still life and is of exceptional quality.
