These watercolours were made for foreign visitors on the Grand Tour and come from a long tradition which flourished from the 16th century to the 19th century in Istanbul. Executed with ink and watercolour on paper, these drawings were sold as souvenirs of Istanbul and Ottoman empire. The good, vivid colours and the simplicity of the lines create an appealing image of urban life in Turkish society at the beginning of the 19th century in Istanbul.
