Literature:
By the end of the 17th century travellers at the Cape were reporting the use of both tobacco and cannabis amongst the Zulu and tobacco was being used as a currency. By 1686 the Xhosa were successfully cultivating both and were known to trade cannabis for brass and beads before 1789. Tobacco became the more popular weed and by the 19th century was part of the social and cultural fabric of daily life.

19th Century
A. A long stemmed carved wooden pipe with three circular tin inlays to each side of
the bowl. Size : 31 cm long – 11¾ ins long
B. A Long stemmed carved wooden pipe overlaid with cut tin designs.
Size : 31 cm long – 30 cm long
C. A short stemmed carved wooden pipe, the bowl within a wood circle, inlaid with a
design in tin. Size : 18 cm long – 7 cm long
