Description / Expertise
Embroidered in tent stitch in wool and silk and applied to a green serge ground.
The central oval scene depicts the Epiphany with the Three Kings travelling on horseback followed by a camel to visit the Christ Child. At each corner is the traditional Dutch motif of flowers in a Classical urn, framed within a border strongly influenced by Turkish carpets from Ushak, imported into Europe at that time.
It is likely that such table carpets were kept for special occasions, this particular piece perhaps being used to celebrate the feast of the Epiphany on the 6th of January.
