Provenance
Provenance : Frank Shute was the eldest son of a large family from Nuneaton, Warwickshire and travelled to America in the early 1870’s. He took up residence in Monroe county, Winsconsin and collected Native American artefacts which he sent back to his father A. Shute in England. The collection was inherited by Frank Shute’s youngest brother Frederick Thomas Shute (1875-1962) and thence by descent.

Literature:
The open line beadwork on this pouch is a continuation of a rigidly symmetrical style executed in quillwork until the 1830’s. Both in quillwork and in beads this style was utilized by several tribes in the Winsconsin area until the 1860’s when bolder and more colourful designs became more popular.
