Description / Expertise
Charles Tunnicliffe was a painter, printmaker, book illustrator and writer. He was born at Langley, near Macclesfield, Cheshire. He was noted for his depictions of birds, animals and the countryside. His pictures were anatomically immaculate had great atmosphere. He won a scholarship to Macclesfield School of Art; then Manchester School of Art, 1915-1921, preceding a Royal Exhibition Scholarship to the Royal College of Art, 1921. He gained his diploma in painting in 1923. Tunnicliffe was elected RE in 1934 and RA in 1954. His work was bought by the British Museum., Harris Museum and the Art Gallery in Preston as well as by overseas collections. He won the gold medal of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, 1975. Tunnicliffe was a hugely prolific illustrator of books about the countryside and had a long association with Henry Williamson, author of Tarka the Otter, 1932. Tunnicliffe’s own publications included My Country Book, 1942, Mereside Chronicle, 1948 and A Sketchbook of Birds, 1979. He was married to the artist Winifred Wonnacott and lived at Bordogan, Gwynedd, Wales.
