THE COTTAGE
WILLIAM JAMES MULLER
1812 – 1845
Oil on board 14 x 10 ¾ inches
Muller was born in Bristol where his German father worked as a conservationist at the Museum. He studied under J B Pyne and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy in 1833. Travels to Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and Egypt helped to enlarge and develop his style. He was especially enthralled with Venice and the Middle East, where he painted many of his best works.
He was seen as one of the greatest talent of his age with many of is paintings being bought by luminaries of the art world.
Muller exhibited works at the Royal Academy, British Institute and Suffolk Street.
Retrospective exhibitions of his work were held at Birmingham in 1896; The Royal Academy in 1934 and Bristol in 1962 and 1991.
Like R.P Bonnington, Muller died very young thereby never achieving the status he justly deserves.
