SPORTSMEN IN A LANDSCAPE
ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM NEDHAM
Flourished 1823 – 1849
Oil on canvas 21 x 32 inches
Equestrian painter who is thought to have come from the Leicestershire area and to have been a pupil of J Fernley Snr. A number of his works record scenes in Leicestershire. He painted equestrian subjects for the local gentry and one of his patrons was a Mr V R Ponchin of Barkby Hall in Leicestershire. There is some confusion over the spelling of his name and it is sometimes recorded as ‘Needham’. However, when he did sign his work it was with one ‘e’.
